THE CIVIC THEATRE’S

BICENTENNIAL WINTER SEASON OF ‘75 AND ‘76

MR. ROBERTS

September 26 — October 1 1

The greatest of American war plays - a superlative comedy - a rowdy, realistic saga
about the crew of a Navy cargo vessel during World War II. The antics are heroic and
hilarious.

Lillian Heilman’s
THE CHILDREN’S HOUR

November 14 — November 22

This powerful play by America's leading woman dramatist — widely praised for its dra-
matic intensity and psychological insight — created a sensation during its first New York
run of 691 performances.

THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

January 16 — January 24

Won 1973's triple crown: the Pulitzer Prize, the Tony and the N.Y. Critics' Awards. This
funny, compassionate play pulls no punches in its penetratingly honest study of four
former teammates who met for a 20-year reunion with their high school basketball coach.
Not recommended for playgoers who might be offended by strong, explicit language.

GUYS AND DOLLS

February 27 — March 13

The colorful, 1940's Broadway demi-worldof Damon Runyon's hustlers, gamblers, chorus
cuties and mission dolls brought to brilliant, fast-paced, song-and-dance life in Frank
Loesser's classic American musical comedy.

INHERIT THE WIND

April 9 — April 17

Lawrence and Lee's absorbing drama about the Scopes "monkey" trial in Dayton, Ten-
nessee during the scorching summer of 1925 — and the dramatic collision there between
two of America's giants, William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow.

Neil Simon’s
THE GOOD DOCTOR

May 21 — June 5

A new comedy with music — based on the stories of Anton Chekhov — by America's most
successful comedy writer. A warm, wise, funny, tender, compassionate, wry, rib-tickling
evening of entertainment! It'll appeal to your head, your heart and your funnybone.

“MISTER ROBERTS”

"MISTER ROBERTS" has been called "the greatest American play to come
out of World War II." Based on the hilarious, best-selling novel by Thomas
Heggen, it is a superlative comedy — the rowdy, realistic saga of the crew of
a Navy cargo ship in the back reaches of the Pacific war. The first production
of the new 1975-76 CIVIC THEATRE BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
SEASON OF GREAT AMERICAN THEATRE, "MISTER ROBERTS" will
open on September 26 for ten performances.

"MISTER ROBERTS" has a cast of 19 men (mostly in their teens and 20's
— with two or three good character parts) and one girl — a pretty Navy nurse.

Audition Readings will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 17 and at
8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18.
